Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies- Tiruvalla (MACFAST), Kerala, India, a post graduate and research institution, was started in 2001, with the objective of offering specially designed courses in Business Management, Information Technology and Biosciences. MACFAST is owned and managed by the Corporate Educational Agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Tiruvalla, with His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos as the President and Patron. In the past 76 years this agency has contributed to the establishment of a large number of schools, colleges, hospitals, medical and paramedical institutions throughout the country.
MACFAST is located in the commercially active town of Tiruvalla, Kerala. Amidst the lush green, stands this multi-storeyed building with a built-up area of 3,00,000 sq. ft.
MACFAST strives to raise its students to meet the challenging demands of the Corporate and Scientific world. In such a mission, research pursuits and technology initiatives gain significance. This had led to the recent establishment of the MACFAST Centre for Research and Development (MCRD). The MCRD offers PhD programmes in the Biosciences and is poised to enhance student creativity and produce high quality research.
A research journal titled Journal of Science, Technology and Management (JSTM), has also been initiated in 2008. JSTM is dedicated to bring together research in these three fields from around the world and also publish original work from the MCRD.
Library and Information Center
MACFAST Library and Information Centre (MLIC) consists of main library and various department libraries of the college. The user community of the centre includes post graduate students, research students and faculty members of the institute. To cater to the information needs of this large community the library is having a collection of more than 10800 books, 145 periodicals, 200 bound volumes of journals, 550 CD-ROMs, more than 500 students’ project reports, 15 volumes of previous year question papers, newspaper clipping files from the year 2001, pamphlets and brochures of various institution, cartographic materials etc. MLIC acts as the chief repository of documents of the institution. It is open from 8am to 10pm. MLIC uses SOUL (Software for University Libraries) to facilitate the maximum exposure of documents and to automate the library operations. The documents are organized in shelves using Dewey Decimal Class Number (22nd edition) and Colon Book Number.
The major attraction of MLIC is Earn While You Learn program. This program helps the students in attaining an income during their studies. Those selected library assistants are managing the library operations in the evening section (5pm-10pm).
The full pledged digital library which is the repository of electronic information is the major forthcoming attraction of MLIC. The aim of the system is to provide access to digital information through internet.
